I read two things recently that really inspired me. The first was this article about how to become a recognized expert. I realized I need to do a lot more writing about what I’m thinking. The article says, “Most people would rather go with the flow–not stand out. They’ll repeat what they hear or what they read. But they won’t take a stand or voice an opinion.” I certainly have opinions – anyone who knows me personally knows I’m actually very strongly opinionated. (I prefer that term rather than “stubborn!”) But I don’t always communicate that through my writing. The article also says I should be blogging at minimum twice a week. Twice a week? I was aiming for one blog post a month (and not doing a very good job of it).
Then I read this quote on Tumblr (not following me on Tumblr yet? Follow me at http://jenekapelaleadership.tumblr.com/):
“You’ll become known for doing what you do. It’s a simple saying, but it’s true. When you do something, you will become known as the kind of person who does that particular thing. The only way to start being asked to do something you want to do is to start doing that thing on your own. Eventually, if you do it well, and long enough, people will start asking you to do it for them.” – Jonathan Harris
Not only do I need to WRITE more about my opinions on what I do, but I need to DO more of what I actually do! Easy, right?
The good news is this realization has kick-started some projects into gear. I’ve:
- Set up a MailChimp account so I can start sending out newsletters. This will force me to write more and also communicate all the great things I’m working on! You can sign up for my newsletter on my website: www.jenekapela.com.
- Redesigned my website to be more interactive. Check it out!
- Made a commitment to write more blog posts focused on my thoughts and experiences.
- Doubled my efforts to finish the signature leadership assessment I’m designing. I’m almost done! I just need to figure out how to automate the survey and profile through my website.
Also, as a result of all this work, I will be watching fewer cat videos on Facebook. But I WILL be bringing you more frequent blog posts, so stay tuned!
